(There is a lot here, so you might want to print it out -- to serve as a "guide".)

How to Reach the Lawmakers

Want to contact your state senator or assembly member, but do not know how? There is a great web site www.leginfo.ca.gov where you can get this information. (However, at times connecting to this site and downloading pages to view can be frustratingly slow.)

Too Slow or Not Working? Do not despair! There is still the good old Pacifc Bell phone book. Look for the "Government Pages" section located near the front of the book and highlighted by blue-bordered pages. Then find the "Government Officials" page (around page 18 or thereabouts). There you will find contact information for your key Federal and California State officials -- opposite which is a map showing U.S. Congressional Districts and State Senate and Assembly districts in your area.

How to Find Out about Legislation

At the http://www.leginfo.ca.gov web site, you can get detailed information and/or concise updates on California Senate Bills and Assembly Bills.

To get detailed information about a bill:

  1. First go to the "leginfo" home page and click on "Bill Information".
  2. Then "search" for bills:
    • by session ('97-'98, '95-'96, '93-'94)
    • by bill number (if you know it)
    • or by keywords and/or author(s)
  3. Or click on "Index" to view list of all bills introduced.
To get timely "updates" on Assembly Bills and Senate Bills:
  1. First go to the "leginfo" home page and look for "Daily Updates".
  2. Then click on either "Assembly Bills" or "Senate Bills".
  3. Bills will be listed by number -- with links to complete bill history.
